On the Internet large and global social networks used by millions of people worldwide can be found. Specific interest groups, such as for BBW, are also available in those social networks. Because these are very high-traffic websites, most of their groups are often very large as well. Although these websites contain these specific interest groups, the website itself is more of a general purpose social network, meaning there are many different interest groups.

One disadvantage of general purpose social networks is that although there are specific interest groups, these don’t always perfectly cater for the interests of that group. For example, in BBW communities online there are people which are interested in plus-size clothing. On a BBW social network, you may find an entire section of the website dedicated to plus-size clothing, including manufacturers, prices, styles, seasonal garments and the like. On a general purpose social network these things are more difficult to implement because its target audience caters for more generic topics.
